Desert Festival - Jaisalmer

Desert Festival - Introduction

No visit to Rajasthan is complete without a visit to the Desert Festival, which takes place in the month of February in Jaisalmer. The setting for the festival is the wind-caressed sand dunes. Under the magic of the full moon the entire canvas of desert sand undergoes a spectacular change, appearing almost mysteriously silver and strangely haunting. This is where, on a makeshift stage, the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation organizes its cultural shows. Folk singers normally begin the program and the desert comes alive with the magical strains of Rajasthani music. Artistes of international repute are selected for the performance so that audiences can experience the very best.

Dances typical to the State are also performed. The Ghoomar, a dance form, most commonly associated with Rajasthan. The Moria, Chari, Dhap, Ghair and many more delight the visitor with
their vigor and colorful costumes. Kalbelia dancers are the most popular of all. This dance is executed by young girls dressed in long black skirts, blouses, and odhnis all embroidered with silver. Dancing to an almost electrifying beat, the girls sway and rotate their torsos with such agility that they have often been likened to the famous belly dancers of Egypt.

Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation organizes some cultural programs on a larger scale at the Poonam Stadium just below the fort. The setting is spectacular and the visitors come in overwhelming numbers. There is a parade of gaily-caparisoned camels and the vivid colors that Rajasthan is so well known for, make this a spectacular event. There is something for everyone camel rides, a turban tying competition and even a prize for the most impressive moustache. So next time you plan to visit Rajasthan, come prepared to camp under the stars and let the desert speak.
